Skylights let light into an RV, but they are also one of the easiest places for water to get in. In Las Vegas, years of strong sun can leave a skylight lens brittle and the sealant around it dried out. When you spot a crack or a drip near a skylight, the big question is whether the skylight needs to be replaced or whether the problem is the seal around it. Here is how to tell the difference and what to do next.
Two different problems: the lens and the seal
A skylight leak usually comes from one of two places:
- The lens itself. Many RV skylight domes are made of plastic. Over time, sun exposure can make the plastic cloudy, brittle, and prone to cracking. A crack goes straight through the part that is supposed to keep water out.
- The seal around the frame. The skylight frame is screwed to the roof and sealed where it meets the roof surface. When that sealant cracks, shrinks, or pulls away, water can run under the frame even if the lens is fine.
Figuring out which one you have decides the fix.
Signs the lens needs to be replaced
From a safe spot on a sturdy ladder, look at the dome closely. Signs it is time for a new lens include:
- Visible cracks or splits, even small hairline ones
- Holes or chips from branches, hail, or something dropped on the roof
- Heavy cloudiness or yellowing with a chalky or brittle feel
- Crazing, a web of fine surface cracks that often comes before a full crack
Sealant is not a lasting fix for a cracked lens. A patch over a crack might slow a drip for a while, but the plastic around it is often still weak, and the crack can keep spreading. In most cases a cracked lens means a replacement skylight.
Signs the seal is the problem
If the lens looks solid, check the edges:
- Cracked or shrinking sealant around the frame
- Gaps or lifting where the frame meets the roof
- Loose or rusty screws in the frame
- Thick layers of old patch work that may hide gaps underneath
These are sealing problems. Removing failed sealant and resealing the frame properly can stop the leak without replacing the skylight. Our post on RV roof sealant types explains why the right sealant for the roof matters.
Check inside, too
Walk under the skylight and look up. Water stains, bubbling ceiling material, or soft spots around the skylight opening can mean water has been getting in for a while. That matters because damage to the decking around the opening needs attention no matter which part caused the leak. Our guide to what a shop RV roof inspection includes covers how those signs are traced back to the source.
What to do before you bring it in
If you have an active leak and rain is coming, a temporary cover such as roof tape over the crack can help keep water out until the RV gets to the shop. Treat it as a stopgap, not a repair. Then:
- Take photos of the lens, the frame edges, and any ceiling stains.
- Note when the leak shows up, such as during rain or after washing the RV.
- Do not stand or put weight on the skylight. Cracked domes can break.
How Sky Sealed handles skylights
Sky Sealed is shop-only in Las Vegas, with no mobile crew. During the in-shop inspection, we look at the skylight lens, the frame seal, and the roof and ceiling around it, then tell you what we found. You get a written quote that spells out the work before anything starts.
If the roof itself is worn, a full silicone roof system can seal the surface and around fixtures in one job. Qualifying full silicone roof systems from Sky Sealed come with a 20-year workmanship warranty.
Frequently asked questions
Can you seal over a cracked RV skylight?
A patch can slow a leak for a short time, but it is not a lasting fix. A cracked or brittle lens usually needs to be replaced.
How do I know if the skylight or the seal is leaking?
Check the lens for cracks, holes, and crazing, then check the frame edges for cracked or lifting sealant. A solid lens with failed sealant points to a sealing problem.
Why do RV skylights crack in Las Vegas?
Strong desert sun and heat can make plastic skylight lenses brittle over time, which makes them more likely to crack.
How much does skylight work cost at Sky Sealed?
It depends on what the inspection finds, so Sky Sealed gives a written quote after looking at the RV in the shop.
