A silicone roof system lasts when the work underneath it is done right, and a little preparation on your side helps the shop get there faster. You do not need to clean or repair the roof yourself. That is the shop's job. What helps most is clear information about your RV, a few photos, and a coach that is ready to be worked on. Use this checklist in the days before you bring your RV in.
Why prep matters for silicone
Silicone is applied over a roof that has been cleaned, dried, and repaired. At Sky Sealed, the process runs in four steps: inspect and quote, prep and repair, coat and reinforce, then a final inspection with your warranty paperwork. The prep and repair step is where soft spots and failed flashings get fixed, because silicone cannot make up for a weak base. The better the shop understands your roof's history, the more accurate the written quote and the fewer surprises once work starts.
1. Write down your roof's history
Start a short note on your phone or on paper. Include:
- Roof material, if you know it: TPO, PVC, EPDM, rubber, or fiberglass. Your owner's manual or the original dealer paperwork may list it.
- Past repairs or resealing, with rough dates and what was used, if you know.
- Known leaks, including where you saw water inside and after what kind of weather.
- Anything added to the roof since purchase, such as a new vent fan, antenna, rack, or other mounted gear.
If you bought the RV used and don't know its history, that's fine. Just say so. The inspection will fill in the gaps.
2. Photograph what you have noticed
Photos help the shop see what you have been seeing, especially for leaks that only show up in certain conditions. Take pictures of:
- Ceiling stains, soft spots, or sagging inside, with a wide shot and a close-up of each.
- Sealant you can see from a safe spot on a sturdy ladder, around vents, skylights, and the roof edges.
- Damage after weather events, such as a storm, so it can be documented with dates.
Only go up on the roof if your RV is designed for it and you can do it safely. Otherwise, ladder-level photos are plenty.
3. Check for storm damage and insurance
If your roof was damaged in a storm, call your insurance company before the job, not after. Ask what they need from you. Sky Sealed can document roof condition and storm damage and help you work through the claim process, so mention it when you request a quote.
4. Get the inside of the coach ready
The shop works on the roof, but some prep inside the RV helps:
- Clear the area under roof openings. Move items away from vents, skylights, and the A/C unit inside, so ceiling areas can be checked.
- Secure loose items in cabinets and on counters, as you would for a drive.
- Remove valuables you don't want to leave in the coach while it is at the shop.
- Note anything that doesn't work, such as a vent fan or the A/C, so it's on record before work starts.
5. Plan the drop-off and pickup
Sky Sealed is shop-only in Las Vegas. There is no mobile or driveway service, so plan how you will get the RV to the shop and back. A typical job is done in one to two days, depending on the RV's size and the roof's condition. Ask when you book what timeline to expect for your coach, and plan your trips and storage around it.
6. Bring your questions
A drop-off is a good time to get clear answers in writing. Useful questions include:
- What system do you recommend for my roof, and why?
- Are there soft spots or other repairs needed before the silicone goes on?
- What does the 20-year workmanship warranty cover on my job?
- How should I care for the roof after pickup?
