RV Roof Leaking During a Las Vegas Rain? What to Do Right Now

2026-10-23 · Sky Sealed

In Las Vegas, an RV can sit for months without seeing a drop of rain. That dry stretch is exactly why leaks catch owners off guard. Sealant can crack and seams can open in the heat and sun with no sign of trouble, until the first real storm finds the gap. If water is coming in right now, a few calm steps will limit the damage and make the permanent repair easier.

Step 1: Protect the inside first

Water does the most harm once it soaks into the ceiling, walls, and floor. Start inside:

Step 2: Note where the water is showing up

Where water drips inside is not always where it gets in. Water can run along the roof deck or a seam before it drips. Still, the inside location is the best clue the shop will have. Write down or photograph:

Bring these notes with you. Our post on what a shop RV roof inspection includes explains how the shop uses them.

Step 3: Stay off a wet roof

A wet RV roof is slick, and many roofs cannot safely take a person's weight in every spot. Do not climb up during the storm or while the roof is still wet. If you can see the roof safely from a ladder at the side once it is dry, look from the ladder only and take photos of the vents, skylights, seams, and edges.

Step 4: Use only short-term protection

Until the RV can be properly repaired, a short-term fix can keep more water out:

Avoid smearing household caulk or tar over the problem area. It can trap water, and it has to be removed before a proper repair, which adds work.

Step 5: Let it dry, then get it inspected

A roof cannot be properly sealed while it is wet. Once the storm passes, let the coach dry out and book an inspection. A leak that shows up in the first rain is often a sign that sealant has aged across more of the roof than the one spot that dripped. Soft spots near the leak can mean water has reached the roof deck. Our guide to how often to reseal an RV roof in the desert explains why sealant ages faster here.

At Sky Sealed, every job starts with an in-shop inspection and a written quote. Repairs to the base come first, and then the roof gets a full silicone system that covers the seams, vents, and edges as one continuous surface. Qualifying full systems come with a 20-year workmanship warranty.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my RV roof only start leaking now?

In Las Vegas, months can pass without rain. Sealant can crack in the sun and heat during that time, and the first heavy rain is often the first time the gap lets water in.

Can I put caulk on the leak myself?

It is best to avoid household caulk or tar. It can trap water and must be removed before a proper repair. A secured tarp or covered parking is a safer short-term step.

Is it safe to climb on my RV roof to find the leak?

Not while it is wet. Wet roofs are slippery, and many cannot take a person's weight everywhere. Look from a ladder once it is dry, or let the shop inspect it.
